Shared Performance Competition Instructions
for All Divisions
WHO IS ELIGIBLE:
KMTA PERFORMANCE COMPETITIONS
Students who are currently studying with a teacher who resides or teaches in Kitsap County, or is a member of KMTA, are eligible to compete.

The Elementary Level is limited to 5 students per teacher. There is no limit to the number of Junior, High School or Senior entrants from each studio.

A student who has won 1st place in a past year may not compete again in the same division, but may compete again when they age into the next division.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE:
WSMTA STATE RECITALIST COMPETITIONS
Students who participated in the current year in the WSMTA Music Artistry Program through KMTA are eligible to compete for the honor of representing KMTA in the annual WSMTA Honors Recitals during the June Conference.

PIANO and VOCAL students must have performed two pieces from memory at the Music Artistry Program (MAP) to qualify.

INSTRUMENTAL students are not required to have performed any pieces from memory at MAP.

Students who also meet the eligibility requirements for the KMTA Performance Competition have the option to have their performance considered for one or both competitions by selecting accordingly on the Registration form.

There is no restriction on students winning the State Recitalist Competition more than one year in a row.

Students are highly encouraged to confirm they can perform at the WSMTA State Honors Recital in late June before registering for this competition. Two alternates are generally chosen per category in case the winner must withdraw from the State Honors Recital.
HOW THE COMPETITIONS ARE JUDGED
Each KMTA Performance Competition is decided by an impartial judge from outside the Kitsap Chapter of the Music Teachers Association, and is held in conjunction with the WSMTA State Recitalist Competition.

Students who also meet the eligibility requirements for the WSMTA State Recitalist Competition have the option to have their performance considered for one or both competitions by selecting accordingly on the Registration form.

The judge’s decisions are final. Any questions should be directed to the KMTA Competition Chair.
REPERTOIRE REQUIREMENTS:
KMTA PERFORMANCE COMPETITIONS

Students must perform one selection of music from any one of the standard periods of music (baroque, classical, romantic, impressionist, contemporary).

Performance time is limited to 5 minutes. Cuts are allowed in order to meet the 5 minute limit.

Multiple selections are permitted for dance suites, variations or prelude and fugue, time permitting.

Some transcriptions may be allowed.

Memorization is required for the KMTA Performance Competition in all divisions.

Students MAY be asked to provide a legal score for the judge.

Students who use or provide an unlicensed photocopy of the score will be disqualified from winning any prize.

(VOCAL and INSTRUMENTAL) Students are required to provide their own, live accompanist if the music calls for it. The accompanist must also use a legal copy of the score.

All requirements as above, except for these:

Memorization is required for the PIANO and VOCAL divisions of the WSMTA State Recitalist Competition.

Memorization is NOT REQUIRED for INSTRUMENTAL categories only, although it is encouraged.

Students must select one of the two pieces they played during the Music Artistry Program to play in the competition.

Winners must perform the same selection of music in the State Honors Recital that they played in the competition.

Students performing with music (Instrumental State Recitalist Competitions only) must use a legal copyrighted or public-domain score. Use of an unlicensed photocopy of the score will be disqualified from winning any prize.
